A Spell to Slow Down Time
Lately I’ve been thinking about the seasons of change; not the ones outside my window, but the ones that move quietly through a life. The ones that don’t announce themselves with blooming flowers or falling leaves, but with a feeling. A shift. A soft awareness that something is different now.
As we move into Autumn, I find myself thinking more about the time I have left with my mom. When I was little, there were three of us: my nana, my mom, and me. Three generations moving through the world like a tiny constellation. We went everywhere together. I didn’t realize then how rare that was; how lucky I was to grow up inside that circle of women.
And then life happened the way it always does. Kids grew up. Houses filled. Ours became a multigenerational home, loud and chaotic and full of life. But now, with my youngest heading off to college, we’re back to three again. Only this time it’s my mom, my husband, and me.
The shape is familiar, but the feeling is different.
I’ve started so many new chapters in my life, the kind you write with excitement, with fresh ink, with the thrill of beginnings. Those were the chapters where I was the author, where the story was mine to shape.
But now… now it feels like I’m reading someone else’s book.
And the wild thing is: the authors are incredible. My kids are writing their own stories with courage and independence and messy, beautiful honesty. Their chapters have thrills and chills and plot twists and illustrations. I’m proud of them, deeply proud, not just for what they’ve accomplished, but for how they’ve survived the hard parts. They’ve had their storms. They’ve had their shadows. But they kept going.
I try not to dwell on the hard times. I’ve learned that if you stare too long at the negative, it pulls you under. You don’t have to be happy all the time, that’s not real life, but you do have to appreciate what you have. Because if you’re always chasing more, always trying to be more, you never get to enjoy the magic of what’s already here.
And what’s here, for me, is time.
Time with my mom. Time with my husband. Time with the memories of late‑night conversations with my kids - the ones that stretched long past midnight, where laughter and vulnerability tangled together in the dark.
Those are the moments I’ll miss the most. Not the milestones. Not the big events. But the quiet hours when someone wandered into my room, sat on the edge of the bed, and started talking about everything and nothing. The kind of conversations that only happen when the world is asleep and the heart is wide open.
The season is shifting and Life is changing again. The page is turning.
But maybe that’s the beauty of it; that I get to keep reading. That I get to watch the people I love write their own stories while still living mine. That I get to hold the memories of the past and the possibilities of the future at the same time.
Maybe this season isn’t about losing anything. Maybe it’s about learning how to love differently. More quietly. More deeply. More intentionally.
And maybe, just maybe, this chapter will be one of my favorites.
Spell: Slow the Turning of Time
Certain times in my life, I’ve used a spell to slow down time. Not the kind you’d use when you’re running late but the kind you whisper when life is rushing past you too quickly, when the days blur and the moments slip through your fingers. This spell is for those seasons when you need the clock to soften, the minutes to stretch, and the world to move gently enough that you can savor what’s right in front of you.
I don’t use candles or tools for this one. Most of the times I’ve needed this spell, I’ve been in places where I didn’t have access to anything but my breath, my mind, and the hope that the extra time I need will follow.
Purpose
To ease the pace of time, slow the feeling of life rushing forward, and create space to accomplish, savor, and enjoy more of the moments you have.
Opening
Close your eyes and feel the energy of the world rushing by: a blur, a streak, the sensation of speeding down a highway with everything around you moving too quickly to see.
Take a deep breath. Let it out slowly.
Focus on the rise and fall of your breath, the way it moves in and out like a tide. Let each inhale soften you. Let each exhale slow the world around you.
Keep breathing until you can imagine yourself stepping out of the speeding car and onto solid ground — walking, step by step, at your own pace.
When you feel your body settle, begin the spell.
Speak the incantation:
“May the world slow down while we keep moving with purpose.
May time bend, creating space for what matters.
May our days stretch gently, giving us room to breathe, to grow, to savor.
A quiet widening of life, one moment at a time.”
